So far, from the poll...it seems more people couldn't be bothered than contacted their MP.
The rest of you think politicians wont listen to your concerns? Really? Well you are probably right!
But if we are silent, then don't complain when they spend our tax money on propping up these monopolies.
You all know how politics work; they try $150 Million first. If the outcry from the public is manageable then they will send more money...much more.
If they want to support Canadian program content...who commissions the most Canadian content?..THE CBC! so why are they taking the knife to the CBC?
Anyway I have made it really easy for you:
Step one:
Click Here http://www2.parl.gc.ca/Parlinfo/Compilations/HouseOfCommons/MemberByPostalCode.aspx?Menu=HOC
...and put in your post code
Step two:
Click on your MP's e-mail address. Write your concerns about the governments plan to pay out millions to the big media companies. Make sure you put your correct name down and ask for a reply.
Step three:
There is no step three! It's that easy.
I know most of you are bored with this subject. But this is incredibly important. A democracy works if there is a free press. We have had a media shackled by the views of a family or corporation, now it will get even get worse if the government decides who should survive and who should not.
Lets make our voice heard.
I will be working on my big post comparing buying v renting. You may be surprised by the results. I will need some encouragement to crunch the numbers. If you e-mail your MP, tell me in the comments section and I will get this post out quicker.
BTW $150 Million = 2000 low income housing units = 4000 folks off the streets.

Here's my E-mail;
ReplyDeleteI've been lead to believe that the Federal government is planning to Bail out CanWest Media and I don't believe this would be proper under any circumstance. This smacks of "crony capitalism" which was the main reason for the Great Depression and here we are yet again with too much capital in too few hands. I've read a story which claimed that once a CONSUMER has to pay more than 42 percent of their income on house hold support they become a drag on the Economy because they can no longer afford to buy cars or homes. CORPORATE WELFARE has to come to an end before our countries economy completely collapses. I would appreciate a response.
Sincerely;
I appreciate your work and blog(s)L.E.
Hey Fish, now the government want to bail out big media by purchasing advertisements. Would this amount to anything more than propaganda?

Done and also to the leaders of the three federal parties. Here is the message.
ReplyDeleteI have been hearing rumours about a bailout package in the works for Canwest. I wish to register my strong objections to any such idea. Canwest gleefully loaded up on debt during the credit boom, and have most certainly made their own bed, and as such should lay down in it.
In general I avoid all forms of debt, am in a strong financial position due to years of of working and saving on a modest salary, and now I see my future being betrayed by billions upon billions of tax dollars being channeled to the very ones who helped cause the boom times with no recognition that the very nature of a boom necessitates the following bust. I realize that this statement goes far beyond just the media bailout in question, but I see this instance as being among the least warranted of all.
The world is facing some very tough economic times due to short-term thinking, Canada is and will not be spared, and I believe we should save this money for alleviating the suffering of individuals and help promote a more sustainable recovery, and on no account prop up what is basically an entertainment dinosaur. The quality of "news" provided by Canwest is dubious at best.
I do support stable funding for CBC Radio and Newsworld both of which have some excellent programming, but not CBC TV, which is little different from any fully commercial station.
Very nice Anon.
ReplyDeletePanda...from that link:
"At least the government could benefit from the ads. CanWest, CTVglobemedia and Quebecor have been lobbying the government for help as some of them consider closing or selling stations."
How stupid do they think we are? The government will use OUR money to tell US how GREAT they are. Meanhwile they will bail out their media supporters who will also be telling us how great the government is.
The only word to express what I feel about this is..betrayal.
Alexcanuck. Wow. You should take over this blog.
Fish, I have emailed Mr. Dosanjh as requested. Not that I'm expecting much. I have also signed the online petition in support of the CBC posted by avaaz.org You can sign the petition here: http://www.avaaz.org/en/save_the_cbc/
